The fair was brilliant at the weekend.  Thanks for informing us that it was on.  Other than the electronic boards on the way in to Blyth we probably would have missed it.

Yep was good.  Bring back the firework display on the quayside.  It was always packed with no bother.

On the subject of the image of Blyth, does anyone know where the Sensory Garden is situated? As it happens I do, it is on Ridley Street on the Quayside. It has a seating area and "talking posts" and views over the river. However it has been totally and utterly neglected, probably since the old Blyth Valley Borough Council disappeared. Overgrown with weeds and deposits of dog crap it just looks abandoned. It was opened in 2002 by the then "Young citizen of Byth". It also has a plaque of Sammy the seagull which was the mascot of the now closed Wensleydale school. Come on you councillors, if you care about Blyth as much as you say you do, get it sorted.

I would like to know when someone is going to clean up the sensory garden on the quayside.  It was well kept and looked after when Blyth Valley Council were still around, but Northumberland County Council seem to have forgotten it exists!  It's a shame that such a nice area where people could sit, is now totally overgrown and littered with dog mess!

It will probably be cleaned up when there is a Royal visit to open a new factory or Wind Farm complex should there be a chance that it would be seen by the people concerned from their cars otherwise it will rot.In saying that dog owners could help the situation by clearing the mess up after their dogs.

I think the wind mills have quite a good look about them.  I work away and look forward to seeing the windmills on the horizonwhen I come down the laverick.  The latest one is rather large to say the least.

Regarding the installation of the new wind turbine, first of seven replacing the old nine machines at Blyth Harbour, dare we hope that our electricity bills will be lowered to reflect the 'savings' in power production costs / efficiency?

Or, will they too fall victim to the big problem, seemingly  inhererent of this type of  power generation, the blades having to be feathered in a gale to prevent damage?

B Hathaway
Said this on 02/10/2012 At 11:35 pm

I read that the amount of energy used in building them, from the smelting of the steel all the way down the production line to the moving of the tons of dirt to allow them to be placed, will never be recovered by the windmill in its 25 year lifespan.  This means that the carbon monoxide generated in its creation will completely outweigh any supposed benefit to its own carbon footprint. The new one is quite noisy as well. Strangely captivating to watch when the blades are rotating but definitely louder than the original ones.

Am I alone in thinking the winmill is an eye sore

Hey, im from Blyth area originally, moving back after 16 years living in Newcastle.
I was surprised to see how the market seems to shrank in size, obviously woolworths has gone, the travel shop I used to use to book my hols closed, the power station my dad worked and lived next to raised to the ground. Seems now to be a lot of charity and second hand shops, but hey im all for a bit of recycling! A few coffee shops, sambuccas and a few other restaurants have opened which is good. Sad to see clarks shoe shop has gone with its electronic feet measurer, woodcocks now shut, and the poor state of the old hedley and young store, looks like theres been quite a flood upstairs. Delighted to hear wetherspoons have bought the wallaw, cant wait for that to open, and what a blessing to the local economy if primark does make an appearance although parking could get tricky.
The old driving test centre looks like it made way to new flats and what ever happened to all those caravans? Are things really so bad for the co-op that they cant afford to fix the heating so they have those free standing heaters everywhere?
Certainly things have changed in the years ive been away, not all good, but im really looking forward to returning :-)

Has anyone else noticed the amount of methodone users in Blyth market during the week?  Its quite intimidating now.  Where are the police.

I agree.  I brought my elderly mother (first time back in Blyth for years) to the health food shop opposite Argos and there were three of them sitting on the corner shouting at a woman in the street.  They were moved along, but I won't be bringing he back in a hurry.

Hello.

Sorry Laura, we can't post names of people on the website as these comments are passed on to the Town Centre manager and hopefully the council and whilst people may know the culprits it isn't appropriate to single anyone out.  We have stopped a number of other posts naming people appearing on the site but as we feel your comments are relevant we have just removed the names.  I can confirm the police are aware of the matter and that the town council is trying to help resolve this. PS - we are not part of the council but will pass on any comments to them providing they are constructive. We love Blyth as much as you do and hopefully your comments will make our town a better place to work and live. If you have any questions please contact steve at info@blythtown.net.

Well done with the football reports.  Gone through a few now and they are quite in depth.  Good to see someone is interested in Blyth Spartans that isn't directly linked to them.

Hi I am considering setting up a business in Blyth Town Centre and although on my visits Ive found it very pleasant, Im now concerned about the comments about the methodone users, is there a noticable presence of drug users in the town? Also is it effecting the footfall?

BlythTownModerator
Said this on 03/10/2012 At 12:00 am

The town council and the police have been trying to resolve the issue and we believe this is now under control.  It hasn't had an impact on footfall that we are aware of but it has caused a few businesses concern. There are a lot of reasons to come to Blyth and from a business owners point of view (my own views) things are starting to look up.  From the return of the town centre manager, an increase in the days the market is trading, nationally recognised brands opening new stores / refurbishing existing ones in the town, extensive backing from the public sector in terms of renewable energy generation, the newly formed town team to support businesses and positive support from both the town council and county council Blyth is definitely starting to move in the right direction.  If you are seriously looking to open a store in Blyth it might be worthwhile speaking to some of the existing owners.  All towns have their bad points but Blyth is starting to rise well above its own.  The additional market days (not to mention the closure of the Cramlington market on a Wednesday with Blyth now covering for that) has already seen an increase in footfall which no doubt will continue when Morrisons opens in January.  If you are still undecided feel free to drop me (Steve) an email via info@blythtown.net and I'll happily introduce you to some people who agree Blyth still has a lot to offer to businesses.

Why are all the Hotels and Guest Houses in Blyth not published on this website?

How do we expect Tourist to find somewhere to stay?

BlythTownModerator
Said this on 13/03/2013 At 09:20 pm

Hello Colin.  We agree that the hotels and guest houses in Blyth need to be advertised to promote tourism in the town.  Unfortunately up to this point as the website has been run by its developers and isn't associated with the council we've had to fit any updates around work commitments - hence the delay in getting back to you.  However, part of the issue regarding Blyth, after investigation on a county basis is that little exists in terms of a central database for businesses in and around Blyth.  This information has been passed on to the newly created Town Team who have asked the Town Manager to become actively involved in creating a definitive list of all businesses in Blyth.  The result will hopefully include lists of active Hotels and Guest Houses in the area which we will then post contact details for on this website.

Hi - Like the look of this site first time visitor, and as such , thought I'd make use of it !

Does anyone know when the sheds between ridley park and the beach are coming down ? I've heard rumours for the last 4 years that they are due to come down and the land be developed into everything from houses, apartments to bars and restaurants.  Does anyone actually know the truth and when something is going to happen?

We stayed at Ridley Park Hotel, 2000, which we had the wedding reception, as a medium, l was aware there was spirit about, l would dearly love to know the history of the pub how old it is. etc.. sad the marriage did not last. We had special memories when my mother in law who was 90 at the time it was the last time the family was together before she had passed away. also if people knew if it was haunted too. l know l spoke to the staff they did say yes, they told us about few spirit about..

Just read an archaeological desk top survey about Links House next to the beach. The survey was ordered to analyse the archaeological signifigance of the site....prior to redevelopment for housing and a hotel... couldn't glean weather they would actually be knocking down Links House to do this? Anyone know whats going on there?

Hi Mr Fairbairn,

Thanks for the compliments and we agree this site needs to be more up to date.  Currently we try to do this around work commitments as its a site we've set up with the intention of updating when things are quiet but we've agreed internally to make sure it is updated weekly and comments are responded to within a reasonable timescale.  Hopefully now that the Town Team are helping with the site we'll be able to do this more frequently.

Hi Mr Fairbairn,

We can confirm that as we suggested several months back that Wetherspoons' have taken over the Wallaw Cinema.  A press release has been made today by the company confirming that the Cinema is being converted into a Wetherspoon bar as I write this.  Unfortunately though, due to issues with the roof, they haven't as of yet confirmed when it will be opened.  Please keep an eye on this site and we'll update you when we find out either from the company itself or county / local council.

Quoted text below from the book ‘The History Of Blyth, by John Wallace, second edition, published in 1869’

"1860, Sep 26. The entire proceedings of the day passed off to the satisfaction of all parties concerned. This gathering did much for the local institute, by awakening the inhabitants to the fact, that the town possessed an institution of great value and usefulness, which they had not till then properly appreciated".

100+ years later, Blyth was doomed and losing all the industries that made it so great. We've lost so much over the last 50 years in Blyth, including the market, I'm amazed it has any heritage left. Conservation of buildings is one thing, but without the jobs, there'll be little left of Blyth to protect. Blyth has lost its character too, dull and boring modern buildings are popping up without a care in the world about whether they fit alongside buildings that were built in the early 1800’s. Prestos was a prime example of failure to take into account the style and exquisiteness of the surrounding buildings, it was just a square eyesore with no character, and replacing Blyth train station which should never have been demolished. Another eyesore is the bus station, once a beautiful area for the community to enjoy, destroyed by a concrete block right in the centre. At least they set it back a little so as not to interfere too much with the surrounding buildings. Let’s just hope with this regeneration, they demolish it and return the station to its former glory. At least the new Morrisons building isn’t an eyesore like the other two mentioned, but does it really fit well in its surroundings I ask?

Anyway, since the closure of the major industries, Blyth has been left destitute with no outlook for a secure industry. It has lost its 1860’s quote of ‘great value and usefulness’, with light manufacturing seemingly the only major way to go for employment, I can safely say “the spaces that were left, will never be filled again”.

Can someone put Blyth back on the industrial map again?

What is wrong with the people who organise events in blyth.I very rarely hear of events that are going on within the town, Today 8/3/13 is the first time i have heard about the Ridley park winter festival it seems poor that someone in the town doesnt know of events that take place within the town.

The only reason i know about the bring back the blyth fireworks display is because i saw a small advert in the local links,This should have been on the front page of the news post leader

Please Please Please advertise the events more widely infuture
